HEMMET the home –  overlooking Simrishamn

Simrishamns vandrarhem och B&B

Simrishamns hostel and B&B 🏡 was built in the 1950s as a nurses’ residence and designed by Valdus Wikén in the typical architecture of the time, with a focus on functionalism using sturdy materials and great light. The building has been a hostel / vandrarhem since 1998 and was then run as Stf Simrishamn vandrarhem. We reopened after a short break with new owners in January 2020. Today we offer affordable holiday accommodation for those who want access to a kitchen where you can make your own meals, as well as laundry facilities. Maybe as a break on your hike 🥾 or as an overnight stay during your cycling holiday 🚲 along the South East trail.

There will be an Österlenhemester this year too!

HEMMET the home, for those who want to holiday on Österlen on a budget but still stay in a comfortable home like atmosphere. We have decorated it with things we like and each room is unique with its own feel. On your leisure time you should be relaxed, therefore we provide you with ten comfortable rooms with separate WC/sink, that is six double rooms and four twin rooms. The beds are made when you arrive and the final cleaning is included in the price. From the double rooms upstairs you can see the sea on the horizon, overlooking the harbour.

We offer a price-conscious and environmentally friendly accommodation for you on an eco-holiday in Österlen, five minutes from the train station in Simrishamn. There are hourly buses and trains to Kristianstad, Malmö and Ystad. The house is quietly located with its own garden 🌳, the hedges protect from the street outside and there is comfortable outdoor furniture in a relaxed atmosphere. The garden is perfect to take a break during hot summer days, where you can plan your day, eat your breakfast or just have a quiet moment with a book. There is a large barbecue you can use as well as outdoor furniture and hammocks to lie on. As we are located on a small hill near the centre and you can feel the sea as a background.

We are a environmentally friendly business with a focus on natural materials and eco-friendly products. The price of your booking includes a organic self service breakfast which you will find in the kitchen in the basement of the house. 🍎.

On a budget, still comfortable and nice

The ambition is to offer a alternative between the lower prices of a hostel and the homey feel of a B&B. We have also been inspired by Japanese ryokans where you stay simple but nice with self-catering. To keep the prices low, the hostel is unmanned except for cleaning after breakfast. Instead, you check in with a code that you receive the same day as your check-in. We also ask that you take out sheets and towels when you check out and put them in a laundry bag. Cleaning at check-out is included and the rooms are made up when you arrive, sheets and towels are included.

The nearest beach is Tobikviks beach ⛱️ just north of Simrishamn, and a little further away vårhallarna. To the south, the mile-long sandy beaches begin at Spraggehusen just south of Skillinge. If you want to pitch a tent on the site, please let us know in advance, as well as if you are coming with a camper or caravan. We have our own parking on the plot for up to five cars 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗, as well as free parking on the street outside.

Kitchen for holidaymakers

There is a large shared and fully equipped kitchen 🍳 in the basement of the house available for you as a guest. There are double ovens, stove, microwave and all necessary kitchen equipment. There are also two fridges in the kitchen with each room having its own shelf. Here you can easily make your own meals or prepare a packed lunch for your outing. Coffee ☕ is included and can be taken away. In the garden you will also find our sturdy barbecue made by the local blacksmith in heavy steel.

Self check in

When you book, you will receive a confirmation email with some general information about your booking. As the date of your stay approaches, you will receive another email with a code to enter the house. On the actual day of your check-in we will send you another code and instructions to collect your room key 🔑, if we have received your mobile number at the time of booking we will also send you the information by text message. We guarantee check-in after 4pm but usually rooms are available earlier than that, we will send the check-in information as soon as your room is ready. Check-out is no later than 11.00 in the morning. If you need to store your luggage during the day, we can usually arrange this.

All guests are encouraged to separate their waste, either in the kitchen or using the bins in the car park. Sheets, towels and other textiles are eco-labelled, of course we only use eco-certified detergents. Coffee and paper products are also eco-labelled. in 2020 we repainted all rooms and public areas, in the rooms we used fully ecologically degradable paint on the walls and hall other paint is Swan-labelled. Discover Österlen

Haväng

Take bus three from Simrishamn and get off at Vitaby Church where the famous Swedish writer “the Pirate” is buried. You can either bring your bike or walk down to the nature reserve. Haväng is located on the southern part of Hanö Bay on the east coast of Skåne and is a very popular destination for many visitors to Österlen. At south, Haväng is connected to Stenshuvud National Park and to the north to Brösarp’s hills and Maglehem, as well as Vitelmölla’s beach hills. The area is very varied and the meadows slope dramatically down to the sea, one part of the coastal strip is sandy beach. There are two pleasant cafes and plenty to see, not least the horses and sheep that roam freely in the large field.

Knäbäckshusen

One of the finest beaches on Österlen can be found at Knäbäckshusen, which starts at Lilla Vik north of Simrishamn and continues up to Stenshuvud. The further north you go, the fewer other bathers you will have as neighbours. The beach is remarkable and enticing with the wild nature at your back and trees bending out over the sand.

Stenshuvud

Stenshuvud brings together all of Skåne’s nature, probably as it once looked in the past. Stone farms, grazing cattle on small fields and deciduous forest. The name itself comes from the bare headland overlooking Hanö Bay, 96 metres above sea level below.

The summit of the North Stone Head towers 96 metres above sea level and is the highest of the three lookout points in the park. From here you have a view of the Baltic coast and all the way up to Blekinge. In the southern part of the park there is a fine sandy beach and further north you can swim from its cliffs instead. There is also a rock coffin that is more than 4,000 years old as well as the remains of an ancient and forgotten castle.

Simrishamn

Simrishamn is the capital of Österlen and your starting point for your holiday, known for its blocks of authentic small houses along cobbled streets. In the harbour you’ll find ice cream stalls and restaurants as well as along Storgatan with its various shops and cafés. We especially like KIN Bakery & Fik on Regeringsgatan, The Farm’s wood oven with its cosy Mediterranean atmosphere as well as Quartey’s vegan fantastic and affordable crossover kitchen.

..and then Corona virus considerations

We are probably not alone in finding it difficult to know how to deal with the ongoing pandemic. We have written this text, not least to have some guidelines to follow ourselves. In the home, people live together, it is simply not a place made for social distance, hence the need to show consideration. This is how we think,

  1. This summer we provide a organic breakfast that you make yourself. We have set up our own kitchen counter for this with a reserved fridge. In the room you will also find coffee capsules for the coffee machine in the kitchen.
  2. Kitchen. Although our kitchen is large, it can get crowded if several people are there at the same time, so we ask that you book times for when you need to use the kitchen. We believe that with a little planning, quite a lot can be arranged. For example, we have our large outdoor grill, maybe you can prepare your dinner a little earlier than you planned along with something nice to drink and then finish it outside by the grill. In Simrishamn there are also many nice outdoor restaurants in the evening with good food and nice views. Along the sea you will also find nice picnic areas with barbecues.
  3. Dining area. We have set out various groups of tables and chairs, as well as possibly a canvas pavilion with space for up to eight relatively airy seats, it is also possible to fold out the walls in case of rain and place tables and chairs under them as well.
  4. Hygiene. We clean and sweep, but it’s hard to say how to clean more than we already do. We do, however, use disinfectant spray for certain surfaces, like handles, countertops and tables. Since the Home is a place that is often unattended, we also rely on our guests to clean up after themselves in the kitchen, wipe down tables and countertops, and leave them neat for the next guest.
  5. Each room is made up and cleaned when you arrive by our staff. Towels are provided in the room for as many as booked. Soap and hand sanitizer are provided in the room’s toilet. When you leave, we ask that you take out your sheets (not the bedspreads) and put them in the toiletry bag that is also in the rooms.
  6. We have limited the possibility of booking rooms for one night only to two rooms only. Other rooms we prefer to book for two nights or more to reduce the throughput of guests.
